VHF

The RYA Marine Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate a marine VHF radio within UK waters. Using modern training radios, you will learn how to get the best out of your VHF DSC equipment, how to make radio calls in a professional manner and the role of radio equipment in emergency situations.

Our equipment is portable so ask us about bespoke training at your Yacht Club or place of business.   At the end of this course you will take a written and practical examination and, when successful, be awarded a formal licence to operate.

The only requirement is that on the day of taking the exam all candidates must be over 16.

Clive teaches radio to the National Coast watch Institute watchkeepers that keep mariners safe at the Needles and Bembridge Stations.

Radar

This is a one-day course aimed at giving small boat users an understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and for collision avoidance.  We will learn the basics of how radar works, how to operate the controls to get the best out of our small boat equipment, and have fun with some practical exercises using our computer-based simulator.

Essential Navigation & Seamanship

This course is a great introduction to navigation & general sea safety for both those who are new to the sea or for anyone wanting a refresher. This is an ideal course to accompany the RYA Powerboat Level 2 or Competent Crew practical courses.

The course is a total of 16hours which can be taught over two days or spread out over multiple sessions, whatever works for your life.

Day Skipper Shorebased

On this course you will be equipped with enough knowledge to navigate safely in familiar waters and also learn about lights for basic night navigation.

The course takes 40 hours including two exam papers. We can offer this either as an intensive week long course or a series of sessions spread out over a period of time.

Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased

This is advanced training for more experienced sailors building on the knowledge learned on the Day Skipper shore-based course and hoping to skipper vessels further afield and at night.

Again the course takes 40 hours, this time with 3 exam papers which require an extra day. As with the Day Skipper course we offer this as either an intensive 6 day course or a series of shorter sessions.
